Articles in Crossings focus on the positive work by Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing members that demonstrates their commitment to the faith’s 7 Principles. Many good works by committees and individuals within the congregation are inspirational, but relatively few people are aware of the selfless dedication, the challenges overcome, and the joy experienced by those involved. By telling their stories, the congregation hopes to inspire greater engagement in social justice, charity, and other positive efforts within the church.
As editor, I work with leaders of the congregation to develop story ideas, assign articles, edit writers’ work, and collaborate with a graphic designer to produce each issue. The magazine is distributed quarterly internally, as well as externally to community leaders.

THE CHALLENGE:
In the age of e-mail, the Internet, and Facebook, Crossings — a printed monthly newsletter of events —no longer served the communication needs of the Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing. With the congregation heavily engaged in social causes, we transformed Crossings into a feature magazine that tells stories of members’ good works in the community. I edited this quarterly publication, which gained national attention as an innovative way for not-for-profit institutions to showcase their principles and attract new members.
